Communications Services provides installation, maintenance, and repair of all interbuilding cable on campus. We also maintain all connections from the campus to local and long-distance carriers as well as to the fiber interface to the Internet.
To recover the costs of maintaining this infrastructure, we charge a fee for the
dedicated use of each pair of wires. One pair of wires connects one telephone
line. Customers who use campus numbers (prefix 893) are charged for the cable pair as part of the line rate. Customers who need connectivity without UCSB dial tone are charged only for the rental of the cable pairs dedicated to their use.
For University customers, cable pair rentals are typically for a telephone number that has extensions in multiple buildings, alarm circuits, or other special circuits. (Modem connections require a telephone number, so normal voice service charges apply.)
