Signing Up for the Do Not Call Registry

Original posting: 10/13/03

After delays caused by challenges in the courts, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun preparations to enforce the national Do Not Call registry – the list of more than 50 million U.S. residential telephone numbers declared "off-limits" to telemarketers.

UCSB students, whether living on-campus or off-campus, are eligible to register their residential phone numbers with the Do Not Call registry. For those who registered before September 1, 2003, the Do Not Call restriction went into effect as of October 1, 2003. If you sign up anytime after September 1, 2003, telemarketers covered by the national Do Not Call registry will have up to three months from the date you register to stop calling you.

How to Register

You may register at no cost in one of two ways:

  • Call 1-888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register. This process is automated and takes approximately two minutes to complete.
  • Go to the National Do Not Call Registry website and register online. You must provide your email address when registering online, and you will receive a confirmation back via email.

Numbers will stay in the registry for five years.

Charities, political organizations, telephone surveyors, and companies with which you already have a business relationship are exempt from Do Not Call registry restrictions, and may still call you.

Deleting Your Registration

Deleting your registration means that telemarketers may call you.

To delete your registration, call toll free 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). You must call from the telephone number you want to delete. You cannot delete your registration using the FTC's web service.

If you have other questions about the registry, please visit www.donotcall.gov.
